Job Summary

The Camp Health Director is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff at BCNY’s residential summer camp. This role involves providing medical care, administering medications, managing health records, and leading emergency response efforts. The Camp Health Director will report to the Director of Camp Operations and work closely with the camp leadership team and the Camp Wellness Counselor to ensure the well-being of all campers.

Responsibilities

Medical Care & Emergency Response:

  • Provide health care for campers and staff, including assessments, first aid, and injury/illness management.

  • Respond to and manage injuries such as sprains, suspected fractures, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory conditions, and possible concussions—providing first aid and coordinating external medical care as needed.

  • Be on-call and prepared to lead emergency response and crisis management situations.

  • Administer medications according to prescribed schedules and document treatment.

  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding significant medical concerns or treatments.

Health Center & Documentation:

  • Manage the camp Health Center, ensuring a safe and organized medical environment.

  • Communicate with parents and supporting staff to make sure all campers' documentation is accurate and up-to-date.

  • Maintain accurate medical records, including health histories, treatment logs, and accident reports both physically and digitally.

  • Ensure compliance with New York State and Orange County Department of Health regulations and standards.

  • Prepare and stock first aid kits for camp facilities, staff, and off-site trips.

Staff & Camper Health Oversight:

  • Conduct medical screenings for all campers.

  • Verify and maintain health history forms and emergency contact authorizations. Create physical copies to be available to all Leadership staff and Trip leaders.

  • Train staff on camp health procedures, including infection control, first aid response, and risk management.

  • Educate camp staff and campers on proper hygiene, sun safety, hydration, and general wellness practices.

Additional Duties:

  • Assist with the opening and closing of the health center, including inventorying, cleaning, and organizing medical supplies.

  • Review safety and crisis management plan. Provide health-related advisement to the Director of Camp Operations and leadership team.

  • Support mental health and wellness initiatives in collaboration with camp staff.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician, Physician Assistant (PA), or EMT in New York State.

  • Current Basic Life Support CPR certification (required).

  • Experience in pediatric or adolescent healthcare (preferred).

  • Valid driver’s license (preferred).

  • Ability to work in a residential camp setting and handle emergency medical situations.

  • Strong communication skills and the desire to work with children and young adults.

  • Impeccable record-keeping and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of community health resources and best practices in camp health care.

  • A comfort level of computer literacy required, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, and CRM database software to keep patient records

Requirements

  • Flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to work a demanding schedule and on-call duty.

  • Must be able to live on camp property for the duration of the employment

  • Ability to pass a background check, and meet all required immunizations (MMR and Poly required).

  • Must be able to work in an outside environment, where you have the ability to walk/hike daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain regardless of weather conditions.

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, move patients, or equipment frequently.
